Adding a microphone to your eMachine computer is an excellent way to enhance your productivity and make that computer more useful. Whether you use your computer for business purposes or strictly personal reasons, it is important to know how to add new pieces of hardware. Adding a microphone to your PC is not difficult, but it is important to know how to test your new hardware.
- Step 1
Locate the microphone port on your eMachine desktop or laptop. The microphone jack will probably be located on the front of the unit. On a desktop, it probably will be located near the CD or DVD drive, while the microphone port on a laptop will probably be on the front of the case near the middle.
- Step 2
Plug the microphone into the port on your desktop or laptop. In Vista click on the "Start" button, and type "Sound" in the "Start Search" box. Click the "Recording Tab" and then "Microphone." Click "Properties" and then "Levels" to adjust the recording level for the microphone.

Click on the "Start" button, and choose "Control Panel" if you are running Windows XP. Double-click the "Sounds and Audio Devices" icon, and click the "Audio" tab. Locate the "Sound Recording" section, click the "Volume" tab, and adjust the recording volume to your preferred level.
