How to Connect an HP Desktop to a Wireless System

An HP desktop with Windows Vista may come with a network card, but you can purchase a wireless adapter to connect the computer to your wireless network. A wireless adapter allows you to place the machine in any part of the home and connect it to the network without using cables.

1. Step 1

   Install the wireless network card in your computer. There are two types you can add: an internal card or an external USB adapter. The easiest to install is a wireless USB adapter because you don't need to open the computer case.

2. Step 2

   Boot up the computer. Once you log in, the computer should automatically detect the new device. If the wireless adapter manufacturer requires device drivers to be installed, insert the CD and run the device driver installation wizard.

   Click the Start button. Right-click the "Network" icon and select "Properties." Click the "Manage network connections" option.

4. Step 4

   Right-click the "Local area connection properties" icon and select "Properties." This opens a list of protocol options for your wireless adapter.

5. Step 5

   Check the boxes labeled "Client for Microsoft networks," "File and printer sharing for Microsoft networks," and "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)." Click the "Install" button to load them onto the computer. Click the "OK" button.

6. Step 6

   Reboot the computer if prompted. For most setups, your wireless adapter should automatically detect the wireless network. If not, reboot the computer. You should see an icon in the taskbar that indicates your computer is connected to the wireless network.
