How to Use Java On A Mobile Phone

Do you have a mobile phone that is Java enabled but you are unsure how to exploit this feature? Java applications are a great way to add everything from simple games to internet browsers and music players.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A phone that is Java enabled.
  • A computer that has an internet connection
  • A website that offers Java Apps.
  • A little basic computer knowledge.
  1. Step 1

Check to see if your Java. For brand name phones, like Nokia, or BlackBerry, look for a Java icon or just do a quick Google search like "model name + java". For unbranded phones, asking your supplier that it has Java will work.

  2. Step 2
    Creating a
Creating a "Java" folder within the cell phone's memory

Connect your phone to your computer via USB connection. After that, you should see a removable drive appear in your “My Computer” just as if you plugged in a USB flash drive or an external hard drive. If your phone has internal memory as well as a memory card slot inserted (almost always a microSD) you will see two removable drives.
Choose a removable drive with some spare memory and create a new folder
within named “java” (you don't have to call it this, but it will keep
things nice and clean so you can easily locate your apps later).

  3. Step 3
Downloading a .jar file from getjar.com
Downloading a .jar file from getjar.com

Search online to find a java app you like. I recommend this site.

    http://www.getjar.com

They have a nice selection of apps, let you easily narrow your search by manufacturer or platform for easy navigation, and the java apps are almost all free (I recommend using "Java Generic" if you are not sure of your phones model)

After you have found the java application you like, go ahead and download it, but make sure that the file you are downloading is a Jar file (.jar)

  4. Step 4

Once the downloading is finished, a zipped file should show up wherever your computer sends download files (a quick tip is to download to your desktop).

Don't worry about unzipping the file, just click and drag the zipped file from your computer to your USB connected phone (remember the "java" folder from step 2?)

  5. Step 5
The file manager on a test phone
The file manager on a test phone

Disconnect your phone from the computer USB port, locate your file manager on your phone, find your "Java" folder you created early, and open it. Inside the folder you should see your .jar file, so simply select it and allow an installation. If successful, your phone will tell you.

  6. Step 6
Java icon and manager on a test phone

Find on your phone where java apps are run from (could be games, could be an icon, ect), find your uploaded application's name, open it and enjoy.
