How to Set Up XP on a Separate Partition

Microsoft Windows XP is a powerful operating system, with numerous attractive features. In contrast to previous versions of Windows, it has better security options, which are updated from time to time, a faster Internet browser, a sophisticated media player, an inbuilt firewall and a system restore utility. You can easily install Windows XP on any partition of your choice, with its easy-to-use installation wizard. Two different operating systems should not be installed on the same partition, as they can interfere with each other's proper functioning.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Windows XP setup CD
  1. Step 1

Insert the Windows XP setup CD in your computer's optical drive.

  2. Step 2

Click "Install Windows XP" on the welcome page.

  3. Step 3

Click "New Installation (Advanced)" in the "Installation Type" box, and then click "Next."

  4. Step 4

Select "I accept this agreement" on the License Agreement page, and then click "Next."

  5. Step 5

Type the 25-character product key in the "Product key" boxes (the key is behind the cover of your Windows XP CD), and then click "Next."

  6. Step 6

Click "Yes" if you want the latest Windows XP updates to be downloaded from the Microsoft website and installed on your computer; otherwise, click "No." Then click "Next."

  7. Step 7

Select the partition on which to install Windows XP by using the arrow keys, and then press "Enter."

  8. Step 8

Select "Format the partition using the FAT file system" by using the arrow keys, and then press "Enter." You can also choose the NTFS file system. NTFS is a more advanced file system with better security features, but you'll need to select FAT if you still want to run an earlier version of Windows on another partition. If you do not want to format the partition for XP, then select "Leave the current file system intact (no changes)," and press "Enter."

  9. Step 9

Press "F" on your keyboard to confirm the formatting of the partition. After the format is complete, the Windows XP installation will automatically begin.
