You only need to visit one of thousands public locations in order to find a free wireless signal for your laptop or smart phone. Wireless hot spots, as they are called, are available in myriad places from coffee shops and bookstores to the local library and other government buildings. Many businesses place stickers on their doors so that you know there is free Internet available, but if you don't see one, that doesn't mean it isn't available. Just ask.
Things You'll Need:
- Computer with wireless card
- Step 1
Locate a wireless hot spot. If you don't see a sign on the door, ask an employee if wireless Internet is available. You can also use a hot spot location finder or your computer or smart phone to find out if there are wireless networks available. In Windows, for example, you can go to the signal strength symbol in the lower right corner of your screen and left-click to search for networks.
- Step 2
Connect to the network. Once you've identified the available networks, select one and choose "connect."
- Step 3
Enter the security code. Some networks are open and do not require additional information in order for you to register your computer on the network and begin surfing the Web. Other networks require that you input a security code. If the local network is secured, that doesn't mean you have to pay for it. Just ask an employee what the security code is. In some cases, such as at hotels and some chain retailers, you will find your log-in information on your receipt or other paperwork.
- Step 4
Open your browser. Once your computer has registered on the network, you will have access to the Internet.
