How Do I Get Favorites Back in Vista Internet Explorer?

When you custom install "Windows Vista," you can import your old files from your previous version of Windows. During a custom installation, Windows will automatically create a file called "Windows.old" which will contain folders for the following files: "Windows," "Program Files" and "Documents and Settings." There are just a few simple steps you need to take to restore your old "Favorites" file into your new "Internet Explorer" installation.

Installing "Windows Vista"

1. Use custom installation for "Windows Vista." If you have "Windows XP" or "Windows 2000" on your hard disk, do not choose the upgrade installation. You can only create "Windows.old" by doing a custom installation.

Retrieving your Favorites

2. 1. Go to "Start" and then "Internet Explorer."
   2. Hold down Alt+C. This will bring up the "Favorites Center." Press the left arrow to capture the files you want.
   3. Go to "Start" again.
   4. In the "Search Box," enter the following: %systemdrive%\Windows.old
   5. Double-click on the following in order: "Documents and Settings," "User_Name," "Favorites."
   6. Drag all the files you captured in Step 2 from the "Favorites Center" into the new "Internet Explorer: "Favorites" folder.
   7. Once you have moved all the files, close "Favorites Center."

Removing Window.old

3. Save all the folders you need from this file. Then perform the following:
   
   1. Go to "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories," "System Tools."
   2. Go to "Disk Cleanup."
   3. Under "Disk Cleanup Options," choose "Files From All Users On This Computer."
   4. Under "Disk Cleanup Drive Selection," choose the disk drive you want to clean. Select "OK."
   5. Under "Disk Cleanup," choose "Previous Windows installations." Select "OK."
   6. Confirm by selecting "Delete Files."
