How to Set Up DSL From a Computer to a Wireless Laptop

High-speed Internet access is available through many telephone companies using a technology called Digital Subscriber Line, or DSL. Most DSL modems have one port for a wired connection to a single computer. However, some DSL users may wish to use their high-speed Internet connection for more than one computer. Some computers, such as netbooks, have only a wireless network adapter.

For a DSL user to connect two or more computers to the high-speed Internet connection, a device such as a properly configured wireless DSL router would be needed
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • DSL modem
  • Four-port wireless DSL router with Setup CD
  • Two category 5 (Cat5) ethernet cables
  • Computer with wired network adapter
  • Laptop or netbook with wireless network adapter
  • Pencil and paper
  1. Step 1

Plug one Cat5 cable from the DSL modem to Port 1on the wireless DSL router. Plug the second Cat5 cable from Port 2 on the wireless DSL router to the computer with the wired network adapter.

  2. Step 2

Place the Setup CD in the CD-ROM on the wired network computer. Run the wireless DSL router setup utility. Select a username and password to log into the router in the future. Select a name (also known as SSID) for the router, and set up the router encryption. Write down the router username, password, SSID and encryption key (an alphanumeric value generated by the router for security purposes). Complete the Setup process, click "Finish" and remove the CD from the drive.

  3. Step 3

Boot up the computer with the wireless network card. For Windows XP, click "Start," choose "Control Panel" and select "Network Connections." Right-click "Wireless Network Connections" and select "View Available Wireless Networks." Select the network that matches your SSID and enter the encryption key when prompted.

  4. Step 4

Test the Internet connection on each computer by opening a web browser program (such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox) and typing a website into the search bar.
