Each website has a numerical identifier known as an IP address. Each IP address is unique. Special computers known as servers run websites. Every computer connected to the Internet has an IP address.
- An ISP, or Internet Service Provider, assigns an IP address. The address can be static or dynamic based on the preference of the ISP.
- Dynamic IP addresses change every time a computer connects to the Internet. Static addresses remain the same.
- An IP address is comprised of nine to ten digits expressed in a dotted decimal notation. For instance, the IP address for Google is 216.239.51.99.
- IP addresses tell the ISP where a computer is located and which computer is being used. ISPs keep a log of all IP addresses assigned at any given time. Websites can also store IP addresses as a way to manage traffic.
- Tracking IP addresses allows law enforcement officials to track illegal behavior, such as illegal downloading or pornography, and to successfully prosecute criminals.
