In business and education, Powerpoint presentations are a key method for teaching, delivering information, and making things happen. When you give an effective presentation, things get done properly and efficiently. When you give a subpar presentation, confusion, disagreement, and apathy can ensue. Here are some ways to make sure your presentation is effective.
- Step 1
Give an agenda upfront. Make it very clear what you are trying to accomplish. In most situations you will want to give your recommendation or key takeaway in the beginning.
- Step 2
Use simple slides with only a few key points. If you barrage everyone with data you detract from what is truly important on your slides. Don't try to impress people with lots of text. Keep the text to a minimum.
- Step 3
Keep slides interesting. Use pictures, graphs, and charts. Make sure they are relevant and compelling.
- Step 4
Don't simply read the slides. If you only read the slides you don't add any value. Your audience can read. Use the slides as a guide to direct your presentation, but make sure you are adding information.
- Step 5
Involve members of your audience in the presentation. Ask questions and allow audience members to comment where appropriate.
