Category 5 telephone wire is now the minimum standard for household telephone and Internet use. It provides fast Internet and Ethernet abilities and clarity during phone use. Since its introduction, both category 6 and 7 wire has become available.
- Cat 5 telephone wire, sometimes written as CAT5, is an abbreviation for what is known as category 5 telephone wire. It is composed of four twisted pairs (or eight total) wires which carry telephone and data signals for phones, faxes and computers.
- Category 5 telephone wire has two notable features. The first feature is that it reduces buzzing or interference during telephone calls. The second feature is that it enhances the performance of high-speed communications such as Internet connections.
- Category 5 telephone wire falls under the Ethernet category. Ethernet is the most widely installed local area network (LAN) technology. In Cat 5's case, it consists of special grades of twisted pair fiber optic wires. Ethernet is also used with wireless LANs, making Internet connections speedier and easier to access.
- Category 5 telephone wire may be self-installed. It is a time-consuming process, however, and unless someone has done similar wiring in the past, it is not recommended. The category five wiring system is made up of the following color combinations: white/green, green, white/orange, blue, white/blue, orange, white/brown and brown. Though it is a big project, it is an advantage to having category 5 wire installed in every room of the house for phone and internet purposes, however.
- While category 5 telephone wire is recommended for use inside the house because of its abilities and clarity, it is now a minimum requirement for a house. By the year 2008, category 5 telephone wire was superseded by and being replaced with category 6 telephone wire. Category 7 telephone wire is now available.
