How to Delete Windows Vista

Window Vista has received a lot of attention since being released in 2007. While some of the attention has been good, some of it has been bad. Lots of PC users have decided to abandon Vista and jump ship to other Windows operating systems such as XP or even free alternatives like Ubuntu. Deleting Vista may seem like a difficult task, but in actuality, it's as simple as backing up files and reformatting the hard drive.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • External hard drive or flash drive
  1. Step 1

Choose an alternative operating system . Once you get rid of Vista, you will not be able to use the computer unless you have another operating system already in place or have decided on an operating system to install. You should never delete an operating system unless you already have a replacement in mind.

  2. Step 2

Back up your files. Copy and paste all your important documents, files, music and photos to an external hard drive or flash drive. This is important as you'll be erasing Vista and therefore erasing the hard drive's contents as well.

  3. Step 3

Right-click your "Computer" icon on the Desktop and select "Manage."

  4. Step 4

Right-click your hard drive "C:" and select "Format." A box will then appear.

  5. Step 5

Type in the name for your new partition. This could be "notvista" or simply "new." Select "NTFS" for the File System and "Default" for the Allocation unit size. Then click "OK."

  6. Step 6

Click "OK" to proceed with the formatting process. The computer will reboot upon completion of the formatting process and Vista will be removed from your computer.
