How to Connect a Headset to a Computer

Headphones can be very useful when enjoying music or playing video games on your computer. If you want to interact with others through your computer, though, you should consider buying a headset. These combine both a microphone and earphone into one device, making it much easier to speak with and hear others through the computer. Headsets will come in handy while video messaging or playing online games against human opponents.

Instructions

For Desktop

1. Step 1

   Identify the two connector plugs on your headsets. There will be a plug for both the microphone and earphone jack of your computer. If your headphones came with instructions or a manual, read that information to learn which plug is for the microphone and which is for the headphones.

2. Step 2

   Look at the ends of the plugs to find out which is which. The end of the headphones chord will most likely be green or blue, or sometimes black. There will probably be a headphones icon on the end of the plug as well. The plug for the microphone will most likely be pink, although it could be red. Once again, there will probably be a microphone icon on the base of the plug.

3. Step 3

   Find the right jacks on the back of your computer. There should be two jacks which match the colors of the plugs found on your headset. These jacks may also have the microphone and headphone icon underneath them.

4. Step 4

   Plug the microphone chord into the microphone jack and the headphone chord into the headphone jack. Once you do, you should receive a message on your computer that the device has been connected.

For Laptop

5. Step 1

   Locate the two jacks on the side of your laptop. These are what you'll need to plug your headset into your laptop.

6. Step 2

   Find the microphone and headphone icon above or below the appropriate jack.

7. Step 3

   Plug the microphone chord into the microphone jack and the headphone chord into the headphone jack.
