Why won't my computer connect to the Internet

Hello,

OK, so i just purchased a new laptop and have to connect it to the internet. Bought a router, installed it and hooked it all up, my laptop detects internet fine and works dandy. Only problem is, that my desktop computer that connected to a wired modem, which now has the NEW router connected to it, will not detect the internet connection.

After installing the cd and followed all the instructions, it appears we have all the cords in the right place.... here is what we did:

1) Took the existing ethernet cable from the computer and plugged it into the port labeled "internet| on the back of the router.

2) Connected one end of the supplied ethernet cable to port 1 on the router. connected the other end to the computer.

3) plugged in the router to an outlet.

4) followed onscreen instructions to finish the setup process.

Following this, i checked my laptop, it found the network and connects to it great. Tried to go online on the home desktop and it will not connect. When i try to connect, it says the following:

"Error 678:
The remote computer did not respond. For further assistance, click more info or search Help and Support Centre for this error number."

Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated!!!!
Thanks for your help!

PS- I pretty much copied the steps i took from the instruction manual, so please don't say that they are hard to follow or vague- they were what I was given!

Configuration: Windows Vista (laptop) & Windows XP (desktop)
Firefox 3.0.3

How to Add a Printer

When you add a printer, you tell your operating system that you have a certain kind of printer attached to your computer or available over a network. Even if you've hooked up the printer correctly, you still need to add it in the operating system to use it. These instructions are for Windows 98. Instructions for other operating systems or versions may vary.

  1. Step 1

To add a printer, first follow your printer's instruction manual to assemble your printer and connect it to your computer. When you are ready to install the software, have your printer's CD-ROM or floppy disk handy.

  2. Step 2

Open the Start menu and choose Settings, then Printers.

  3. Step 3

    Double-click on Add Printers.

  4. Step 4

Follow the instructions provided by the Print wizard. If you're adding a network printer, be sure to find out its name or network path. To make sure you're using the most recent printer driver, insert your printer CD-ROM or floppy disk when asked. You can also choose a preinstalled driver that matches the printer make and model you're trying to add, but it might be older than a driver that came with the printer. (If you're installing a networked printer, ask your system administrator if there are newer drivers available on the network.)

  5. Step 5

When prompted, indicate whether you want to use this printer as the default. If you have only one printer, you will say yes. If you have two, you must choose which one is to be the default.

  6. Step 6

When asked if you want to print a test page, it is a good idea to say yes.

  7. Step 7

When satisfied, click Finish to complete the installation process.
